bcb723 No idea how I missed this record a few years back but caught the pre-release tracks of the new 2021 release "Mercurial Passages" and was floored. Ghastly sound like the acid kings of Finnish death metal. With over-reverbed solos, mix-piercing keys & slightly deranged screams, something's just straight unsettling about these tracks. The sound often melts together: this is the good shit. And just one look at that goddamn cover & you know this is next level. New album 5/28/21 - should be something. Favorite track: Velvet Blue.

hatepolice Again we look to Finland, the master of Doom/Death for ANOTHER crushingly heavy slab of torment. Vocals are demented, and several ranges used to change up the all too common metal vocal monotony. Plus, look at this cover art? It's fucking SICK! I've said it before, and I'll say it again; 20 Buck Spin NEVER misses! I have the black 12" vinyl. Favorite track: The Magic Of Severed Limbs.

KillingForCompany Landmark Death Metal album in the past decade. Rough, towering, and FInnish at heart, but also subtly enchanting in a way that takes up the mantle from Morbus Chron.
Favorite track: Whispers Through The Aether.

While Finland’s Ghastly may be a new name to many, those who delve deeply enough into the Death Metal underworld, as we here at 20 Buck Spin often do, will recall the band’s debut album ‘Carrion Of Time’ released a few years back on cult Death Metal tastemaker label Me Saco Un Ojo (Morbus Chron, Undergang, Phrenelith). A few years have passed and the band now resurfaces with their masterfully executed 2nd album ‘Death Velour’.

While there’s no question Ghastly’s ‘Death Velour’ is a pure Death Metal album, it could hardly be confused with most of the current bands making the rounds. The nightmarish hallucinatory sound Ghastly invokes conjures the horror of rotting in incomprehensible obscurity, passing into oblivion guided by a many-colored specter of strange origin across the styx. An air of psych-induced weirdness and shrieking dread permeates the decomposed palette throughout the album’s cryptic duration.

Like discovering a forgotten relic of mysterious brilliance from the early Finnish Death Metal scene, Ghastly’s ‘Death Velour’ is a phantasm of blinding light onto the foreboding darkness of this mortal coil.
